Generally speaking, the more votes your web pages have, the more likely they are to rank for relevant search queries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">How do we know? <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/search-traffic-study\/\">We\u2019ve studied<\/a>&nbsp;link-based ranking factors on a few occasions and always find the same thing: the number of backlinks from unique websites (referring domains) correlates strongly with organic search traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/referring-domains-vs-organic-search-traffic-ahrefs-content-explorer-1.png\" alt=\"referring domains vs organic search traffic ahrefs content explorer 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Discoverability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Search engines find new content by revisiting pages they already know about to check for new&nbsp;links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because search engines revisit popular pages more often than unpopular ones, they may discover your content faster if you get backlinks from popular pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Referral traffic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Backlinks exist to point people to useful resources. That\u2019s why they\u2019re clickable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">When someone clicks on a link to your website, you get referral traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What makes a good backlink?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Not all backlinks are created equal. If a plumber has backlinks from two pages, one about cats and one about installing boilers, chances are the latter is most valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This idea also plays out at the domain level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Readers of <em>plumbing.com<\/em>&nbsp;are more likely to click on a link to a plumber\u2019s website than readers of <em>cats.com<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Authority<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Backlinks from strong web pages usually transfer more \u201cauthority\u201d than those from weak&nbsp;ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Page-level authority is something we\u2019ve studied a few times, and we\u2019ve found a clear relationship between it and organic traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Ur_vs_search_traffic-3.png\" alt=\"Ur vs search traffic 3\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sidenote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/help.ahrefs.com\/en\/articles\/72658-what-is-ahrefs-url-rating\">URL Rating (UR)<\/a>&nbsp;is Ahrefs\u2019 page-level authority metric. It\u2019s scored on a scale from&nbsp;0-100.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That said, backlinks from strong pages don\u2019t <em>always<\/em>&nbsp;transfer more authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-pagerank\/\">original patent<\/a>&nbsp;states that authority is split equally between all outbound links on a web page. So if you have backlinks from two pages and one has more outbound links than the other, then, all else being equal, the link from the page with fewer outbound links transfers more authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Are things that simple these days? Probably not. Google has a fair number of patents describing various methods for assigning value to backlinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, internal backlinks also contribute to a page\u2019s authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traffic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Backlinks from high-traffic pages will usually send you more referral traffic than those from low-traffic pages. That\u2019s obvious. The real question is whether backlinks from high-traffic pages positively affect rankings more than those from low-traffic pages?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This is a question <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/links-with-traffic-study\/\">we recently tried to answer<\/a>. We took the top-ranking pages for 44,589 non-branded keywords and looked at organic traffic to the pages that link to&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what we&nbsp;found:<br><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"751\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/new-01_how_rankings_correlate_with_backlink_metrics_image-1.png\" alt=\"new 01 how rankings correlate with backlink metrics image 1\"><br>Long story short, there\u2019s a small but clear correlation between rankings and backlinks from pages with organic search traffic. However, the sheer number of backlinks from unique websites (referring domains) and page-level authority look to be more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Placement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Because people are more likely to click prominently-placed links, some links on web pages likely pass more authority than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Bill Slawski talks about this in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seobythesea.com\/2016\/04\/googles-reasonable-surfer-patent-updated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his analysis<\/a>&nbsp;of Google\u2019s updated \u201creasonable surfer\u201d patent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><p>If a link is in the main content area of a page, uses a font and colour that might make it stand out, and uses text that may make it something likely that someone might click upon it, then it could pass along a fair amount of PageRank. On the other hand, if it combines features that make it less likely to be clicked upon, such as being in the footer of a page, in the same colour text as the rest of the text on that page, and the same font type, and uses anchor text that doesn\u2019t interest people, it may not pass along a lot of PageRank.<\/p><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bill-slawski.png\" alt=\"Bill Slawski\"><\/figure><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg%22%20viewBox=%220%200%20210%20140%22%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" alt=\"Bill Slawski\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bill-slawski.png\"><\/figure><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Consider this when pursuing links. If your link will likely end up in the site\u2019s footer, or along with fifty other sites in the sidebar, then put your energy into other opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Followed vs. nofollowed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Nofollowed backlinks don\u2019t usually influence the linked page\u2019s rankings\u2014although <a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2019\/09\/evolving-nofollow-new-ways-to-identify.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they can<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Because <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/link-building\/\">link building<\/a>&nbsp;takes time and effort, it\u2019s best to prioritize getting followed links. Just don\u2019t kick up a fuss if you get a nofollowed link. Everything You Need to&nbsp;Know<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Anchor text<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Anchor text refers to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/\">clickable words<\/a>&nbsp;that form a backlink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Google says that anchor text influences rankings in <a href=\"http:\/\/infolab.stanford.edu\/~backrub\/google.html#pr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their original patent<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That said, when we <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/anchor-text\/\">studied<\/a>&nbsp;the relationship between anchor text and rankings across 384,614 pages, the correlations were&nbsp;weak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">So while anchor text does matter, it\u2019s not as important as other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sidenote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;If you\u2019re building backlinks through <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/outreach\/\">outreach<\/a>, you won\u2019t usually have much control over the anchor text used when linking to your site. That\u2019s a good thing. It helps keep things natural and is also a sign that the link you\u2019ve acquired is of a certain quality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to check backlinks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">There are two ways to check a website or web page\u2019s backlinks. The first method only works for sites that you own. Use the second to check backlinks to another website or web&nbsp;page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Checking backlinks in Google Search Console<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/search-console\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Search Console<\/a>&nbsp;gives you data about your website\u2019s organic search traffic and overall performance.
